249: Bloom - BtVS - Spike/Buffy - Blooming in the Dark

Title: Blooming in the Dark
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Characters/Pairings: Spike/Buffy, past Spike/Drusilla and past William/Cecily
Word Count: 500
Rating: G/K
Summary: Spike reflects on things he knows bloom in darkness.

They say things cannot bloom at night; he's known for years that was a lie. He used to plant nightshade in an area no one else knew or traversed. It was so many years ago now that he barely remembers it, but he does recall cupping those delicate, dark buds in gloved hands and thinking the time would come when he would need them. He never had though; his miserably long life had taken unexpected curves and endured unimaginable bumps.

Such as the one currently protruding from his forehead, Spike thinks, running his fingers over his Vampiric face. He'd certainly never seen the whole Vampire thing coming. If he had, he would have known that he could make Cecily love him, or kill her for not doing so, and that the nightshade never would be needed.

But he had seen other things grow in the dark too. Drusilla had blossomed from a bloodthirsty lamb to a crazed but mighty power in her own right. He should've seen that one coming, too, he can't help thinking. She never would have needed him back then if she had had the strength she's come to wield. He doesn't look forward to seeing her again, but he knows he's going to have to fight her. Besides, he's in love now with a woman whose morals, strength, and beauty all far eclipse his sire's. He's in love, and even before he let himself act on that love, Dru had already ran off with the next biggest, baddest thing. It always was about power with her.

It's not about power with Buffy, though. No power can eclipse hers but love, and she's not ready to let him love her. He'd do anything for her, give anything. He'd already given so much. He had endured Hell itself to take his soul back, and he hadn't gotten the posh, do-gooder thing for himself. He would have been quite contented to go on being bloodthirsty and not caring about where his meals came from, to not care about anything had she not found a way to infiltrate him.

Like the moonlight slicing through the darkest of clouds, she had found him, and she had made her mark even surer than a Vampire's fangs. He'd been hers for far longer than he'd dared to admit it, and though he's made friends of her friends, cared for her little sister like she was his own, held her, and tolerated her abuse like no other would, she still isn't ready to claim him and all that he's offering her. It might not be much, but it is his very, if unbeating, heart and this bloody soul for which he fought so hard.

But the time is coming. She will come to be his. She will come to love him as he does her. She's blossoming every night, growing stronger and better in all ways, and so, too, is their love. Spike smiles at her approach, already willing to do anything for her.

The End
