challenge #192 'Marble', Phantasy Star IV, The Heights of Academe

Title: The Heights of Academe
Fandom: Phantasy Star IV
Characters/Pairings: Chaz & Hahn
Word count: 200
Rating : G/Gen
Tags: post-game, mostly dialogue
Summary: Chaz hasn't given up his dream of becoming a scholar but he's disillusioned with the Academy in Piata.

"I'd always wanted to go to the Academy," admitted Chaz, "But it isn't anything like how I imagined it."

"What had you expected?" asked Hahn.

"Something more, you know, traditional. People in caps and gowns sweeping along marble hallways full of statues, pondering the meaning of life. Not... all that politics and in-fighting. And watching crops not grow. And nearly getting killed rummaging around ancient ruins."

"Isn't that last part what you already do for a living?" Hahn laughed, "But you're right, academic life isn't as romantic as its made out to be."

"While I was on Dezolis, I thought about going to the Esper Mansion," said Chaz, "But you have to be an Esper. And then Kyra said the in-fighting is even worse. And Raja complained about the Gumbious temple."

"I guess people are the same the galaxy over," Hahn sighed, "Hey, why do you want that life anyway? It doesn't sound like it suits you."

"Are you saying I'm a philistine?" he sighed, "Maybe I should ask Rune if I can be an apprentice Lutz."

"Oh, yeah, because Rune's going to be any easier to work with!" Hahn laughed.

"I kinda miss him, though," Chaz muttered to himself.
