Title: The Heart of a Ranger
Fandom: Walker, Texas Ranger
Characters/Pairings: Gage/Sydney, Walker/Alex
Word Count: 500
Rating: PG/K+
Summary: He's always secretly feared this moment, but he never thought it would be her.
She'd never thought this time would come. He'd always feared it would, but he'd never once thought she'd be the one. Of all the men and women he's worked with in his time, he never would have thought she'd be the one to go bad, not that he could blame her. If anything had ever happened to Alex, or Trivette for that matter, discharging himself from the case or even all of law enforcement would not have kept him from doing the very thing she's now aiming to do for her partner, and her lover. He doesn't know if they ever did allow their relationship to go beyond friendship, but he'd known since they'd first come into his life that they loved each other.
He can't hate her. He can't even be angry with her for he'd do no less himself. But he also can not stand down and let her do this. "Gage wouldn't want this, Syd," he tries to reason with her, keeping his voice calm and coaxing as he circles around her, keeping himself constantly between her and her target. "We've got him. He's not going to get away."
Tears blaze in the dangerous beauty's eyes. They tear at Walker's heart. "You know we're going to make sure he's prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
"I'm sorry, Walker, but that won't bring Gage back."
"Neither will this," he says, spreading his hands wide open. "Put the gun away, Syd. We'll act like we never saw you here." He's already lost one friend; he doesn't want to lose another one. "Please." His voice breaks.
"I'm sorry -- " She's breaking too, again, and her words are a choked whisper. He can't pull his gun on her -- he doesn't have the heart for ever since this whole ordeal began, he's known he would do no less if the Ranger killed had been Trivette or the innocent slain his wife or daughter. That is his mistake. She takes him down, her bullet blazing into his leg. He pulls his gun at last, but he's aiming for her usual arm -- and it's with her other arm that she's clearly been practicing and fires a second gun.
She doesn't even attempt to evade his bullet. She lets him take her, but even as she hits her knees, her eyes aren't on him. Her concern is not for herself. Trivette yells, and Walker knows what's happened. He's lost both his friends now. One's dead, and the other is a murderer. He weeps as he pulls out the cuffs. They'd had such a bright relationship, full of love and promise. He'd thought they'd make all the big ones, just as he and Alex had until now and he hoped still would.
"I'm sorry, Syd," he says as he snaps the cuffs onto her wrists. She still doesn't try to fight him. She doesn't care what happens to her, now that Gage is gone. I'm sorry, Gage. Every present Ranger cries.
