"It doesn't matter what some piece of paper says," he said once. "I'd marry you if I could. But we are married in the eyes of God. He made us for each other, two halves of one soul. We're bound together forever."
She knows his words are true as her eyes ache to close for a final time. She reaches for his hand and sees, through the blood running in her eyes, he's reaching for her too. She clings to him as death calls, and even in the final moments she knows, paper or not, they were always bound together.
