Schmendrick knows that, among wizarding circles, he's something of a joke. His mentor's great failure, so the story goes. But he also knows that, deep down, the ability to touch magic resides in him. He's not a zero; he is capable.

He doesn't pretend to be a master at it; he'd never be cruel enough to lie to himself that way. He's the tool the magic uses to express itself. One day, he'll be able to tap into it of his own accord.

Until then, he waits for those fleeting moments when he can feel the magic awakening in him.
